What Are INCITS Standards?
The International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) is a non-profit organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). Since its establishment in 1961, INCITS has been dedicated to the development and promotion of information technology standards within the United States.
Formerly known as the Accredited Standards Committee X3, Information Technology, it operates under the sponsorship of the Information Technology Industry Council (ITI), a trade association that represents providers of IT products and services.
INCITS members consist of information technology developers, producers, and users. They encompass over 1,700 companies, universities, consortia, and other groups engaged in the creation and utilization of state-of-the-art technologies. What unites all members is their vested interest in the development of standards.
The organization consists of over 50 technical committees and study groups, all under the guidance of their executive board. These members are dedicated to the continual development of standards for emerging technologies, and the updating of standards for existing products that undergo innovation.
Locally, their primary focus is creating new American National Standards to keep pace with the ever-evolving Information and Communications Technology (ICT) marketplace. INCITS members collaborate closely with developers and users to ensure broad acceptance and seamless interoperability before a product hits the market.
On a global scale, INCITS functions as the US Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to ISO/IEC JTC 1, an international organization responsible for setting standards. Its members possess direct access to the international standards landscape and actively participate as voting members in US delegations during global standards meetings and discussions.
