About UL and UL Standards
Originally established in 1894 by William Henry Merrill Jr. as the Underwriters’ Electrical Bureau, later known as the Electrical Bureau of the National Board of Fire Underwriters and renamed Underwriters Laboratories (UL) in 1901, the organization stands as a worldwide leader in safety science. As the largest and oldest independent testing laboratory in the United States, UL continues to uphold its mission to promote safe living and working environments for everyone.
For over 129 years, UL has been dedicated to developing and advancing safety standards for various industries, products, and systems. Through their testing, certification, auditing, and advisory services, UL ensures that products meet the highest level of safety and sustainability. They also provide education and training resources to promote safe practices within organizations.
UL conducts over 22 billion annual tests on a wide range of products, including consumer electronics, alarms, security equipment, lasers, medical devices, and robotics. The company provides services in five key areas: product safety, environment, life and health, university, and verification. With a global presence in 40 countries, UL has a dedicated workforce of over 14,000 professionals.
In 2012, Underwriters Laboratories created a for-profit subsidiary, UL LLC, which took over the product testing and certification business. UL LLC is a limited liability corporation.
On June 26, 2022, UL underwent a rebranding process resulting in the formation of three distinct organizations that collectively constitute the UL enterprise: UL Research Institutes, UL Standards & Engagement, and UL Solutions. This strategic transformation aims to better align with the company’s focus on innovation and deliver tailored services to its valued customers.
