What Are SAE Standards?
The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), now known as SAE International, is a global professional association and standards-developing organization serving engineering professionals across multiple industries. With a membership of over 138,000 engineers and technical experts worldwide, SAE plays a pivotal role in advancing mobility solutions in the aerospace, automotive, and commercial vehicle sectors.
Founded in 1905 in New York City, SAE was established to address transportation challenges in the emerging automobile industry. Over time, the organization expanded its focus beyond automotive engineering to include broader mobility solutions, leading to its current name—SAE International. This change reflects its commitment to the advancement of safe, clean, and accessible mobility technologies for the benefit of humanity.
SAE’s mission is to connect and educate mobility professionals, providing resources that foster innovation, safety, and sustainability. The organization is widely recognized for its leadership in lifelong learning and the development of voluntary consensus standards that shape engineering practices and product performance around the world.
In addition to standards development, SAE International supports STEM education and future workforce development through the SAE Foundation. Notable programs include A World In Motion® and the Collegiate Design Series™, both of which encourage hands-on learning and innovation among students.
SAE membership is granted to individuals rather than organizations, emphasizing professional growth and networking at the personal level. Each year, SAE publishes a wealth of technical papers, research, and historical data, serving customers in more than 65 countries.
