About JSA/JIS and JSA/JIS Standards

The Japanese Standards Association (JSA), also called the Japanese Industrial Standards (JIS) Committee, is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting standardization and management systems in Japan. Their goal is “To educate the public regarding the standardization and unification of industrial standards, and thereby to contribute to the improvement of technology and the enhancement of production efficiency.”

JSA was created on December 6, 1945, as a result of the merger between the Dai Nihon Aerial Technology Association and the Japan Management Association. The Minister of Trade and Industry granted authorization for its incorporation. The organization’s headquarters is based in Tokyo, Japan.

They were officially recognized by the Japan Accreditation Board for Conformity (JAB), and its quality management system center received accreditation in 2002. In addition, JSA conducts research activities related to consumer protection, units, and graphical symbols, which serve as fundamental and widely applicable standards across various fields and management systems. Moreover, JSA actively collaborates with other industrial associations to propose draft JIS as international standards to ISO and IEC.

JSA engages in various activities, including:

  • Certification of management system auditors
  • Development of national standards
  • Support of international standardization activities related to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)
  • Development of JIS and other publications
  • Secretariat work
  • Multinational cooperation
