What Are ISTA Standards?

The International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) is a global alliance consisting of shippers, carriers, suppliers, and educational and research institutions. Its primary purpose is to develop effective packaging methods and logistic systems that prevent or minimize transit and handling damage during the distribution of products.

Originally established in 1948 as the US National Safe Transit Committee, the organization underwent several name changes. It was first renamed as the National Safe Transit Association in 1974, then as the National-International Safe Transit Association in 1992, and finally as the International Safe Transit Association in 1994.

ISTA is committed to offering education, training, and support to the global transport packaging community. They provide numerous opportunities for packaging professionals to enhance their knowledge, excel in their field, build valuable connections, and stay up-to-date with industry trends and solutions. Furthermore, ISTA offers certification services for testing laboratories, transit testing, and professionals.

This certification demonstrates to carriers that the packaging meets the required standard and ensures safe transport. Additionally, ISTA has developed test procedures and projects that simulate the motions, forces, and environmental conditions experienced during the transportation of packaged products.
