About BHMA and BHMA Standards
Established in 1925 as the Hardware Manufacturer’s Statistical Association, the Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA), a nonprofit organization, serves as the leading trade association for commercial builders and hardware manufacturers in North America. BHMA actively engages in the development of standards, codes, life safety regulations, and other endeavors that directly influence the builders’ hardware industry.
Based in New York City, BHMA standards are embraced by over 80 percent of US builders’ hardware manufacturers. They have 75 member companies that produce the majority of hardware items used in commercial and institutional buildings nationwide – from hinges and locks to door controls and exit devices. Any US-based manufacturers and sellers of builders hardware are eligible for Association membership.
BHMA is the sole organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) responsible for developing and maintaining performance standards for locks, closers, exit devices, and other builders’ hardware. Currently, BHMA has more than 40 ANSI/BHMA standards in place.
Nimonik is proud to offer access to the complete BHMA set of standards on our platform, including the ANSI/BHMA A156 series of standards that outline and establish criteria for various builders’ hardware products, including locks, closers, exit devices, hinges, power-operated doors, and access control products.
