Best Options to Access ASTM Standards

In the rapidly evolving landscape of global manufacturing and engineering, access to ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) standards is an operational necessity. ASTM’s library of over 13,000 active standards and 120,000 historical standards provides a universal technical language for industries spanning construction, petroleum, medical devices, and even additive manufacturing. As a result, ASTM standards establish a universal language for quality, safety, and performance across more than 150 industries globally.

For example, the top 10 most widely used ASTM standards include:

  • ASTM E8/E8M – Standard Test Methods for Tension Testing of Metallic Materials
  • ASTM D638 – Standard Test Method for Tensile Properties of Plastics
  • ASTM A370 – Standard Test Methods and Definitions for Mechanical Testing of Steel Products
  • ASTM D790 – Standard Test Methods for Flexural Properties of Unreinforced and Reinforced Plastics and Electrical Insulating Materials
  • ASTM E18 – Standard Test Methods for Rockwell Hardness of Metallic Materials
  • ASTM C150/C150M – Standard Specification for Portland Cement
  • ASTM B117 – Standard Practice for Operating Salt Spray (Fog) Apparatus
  • ASTM D2041 – Standard Test Method for Theoretical Maximum Specific Gravity and Density of Asphalt Mixtures (Rice Test)
  • ASTM E112 – Standard Test Methods for Determining Average Grain Size.
  • ASTM F1140 – Standard Test Methods for Internal Pressurization Failure Resistance of Unrestrained Packages

While ASTM’s standards are voluntary, they are frequently incorporated into laws and regulations, building codes, and international trade agreements — making them obligatory for many businesses. Very often, products and contracts will reference ASTM standards, making them contractually binding requirements.

Recently, the marketplace for these standards has shifted significantly, moving away from legacy distributors toward more integrated, digital-first platforms. As a result, it may be time to reevaluate the most efficient and cost-effective way for your organization to access ASTM’s documents.

Whether you are a small laboratory or a multinational corporation, this article compares the primary methods for accessing ASTM standards — ranging from free reading rooms to centralized digital subscriptions — to help you determine which model fits your workflow and budget.

Reading Room — Free Public Access for Limited Standards

ASTM maintains a free, online reading room that allows users to only read, not download or print, safety-relevant standards that are Incorporated by Reference (IBR) into U.S. regulations. Standards here are provided as a public service to ensure that when a law requires organizations to follow a standard, they can at least access what that law demands without a paywall. The platform offers access to the specific versions of standards referenced in laws and nothing more.

Advantages

  • ASTM’s Reading Room is free. You can create an account in less than a minute to start browsing ASTM standards.

Constraints

  • Standards here are “read-only” and cannot be downloaded or printed.
  • Standards available on this site are the versions referenced in the respective U.S. federal regulation or law. Therefore, the ASTM standards here may not be the most recent or up-to-date versions available.
  • No tools or features are provided to enhance usability.

Retail — Individual Standards Purchases with Optional Bundles

For small businesses or project-specific needs, the retail model remains a practical method to access ASTM documents. As of 2026, ASTM is phasing out printed publications and PDFs that have a print option in its retail offerings. The options for purchasing ASTM standards for individual use by a single person will be limited to locked PDF files that cannot be shared.

Individuals can purchase single standards in PDF and print format directly from sources such as the ASTM website, the Nimonik Standards Store, or other points of sale. These document purchases are for individual users and cannot be shared with others. When buying standards in this manner, you often have the option to purchase bundles that combine the PDF and print at a discount and/or the current version plus a redline document showing changes from the previous edition.

Advantages

  • Retail is the lowest cost method to obtain any particular ASTM standard if it is only needed by a small group of people. There are multiple options including PDF and print formats, as well as redline comparisons.
  • Purchasing a standard in this way gives an individual perpetual access to that specific version. Once it’s delivered, it’s yours for life – as long as you do not change email addresses or computers!

Constraints

  • Standards purchased via retail are expensive once your organization has multiple sites and/or users that need additional copies of the document. Additionally, keeping track of each document’s purchases and authorized people can get complex and the same document is often purchased multiple times by an organization, incurring additional fees.
  • Retail standards only provide a specific version of an ASTM standard (with the possibility of the redline comparison). They don’t come with additional tools or features that are commonplace in standards subscriptions such as historical records, free updates, or comparison tools.

ASTM Compass — ASTM-Only Library Access

For organizations that only use ASTM standards and rely heavily on associated content such as journals and conference proceedings, ASTM Compass offers a great solution. As ASTM’s flagship platform, organizations can subscribe to ASTM Compass and access volumes of standards grouped by materials (such as glass, or concrete) or the entire annual book of ASTM Standards.

Redline comparisons show exactly what changed between the latest versions of a standard and users can share internal notes, attachments, and bookmarks across the whole team. Additionally, the ASTM Digital Library contains over 35,000 chapters, journal articles, and technical papers that supply the research and data supporting the standards — a handy addition for specialists that need to know the reasoning behind a specific guideline.

Advantages

  • ASTM Compass offers full access to all of ASTM’s published works, even technical documents that no other provider can offer.
  • Some workflow tools are included in ASTM Compass, facilitating collaboration within teams as well as highlighting the differences between current and previous standards versions.

Constraints

  • ASTM Compass is ASTM-centric, providing limited access to the broad array of standards from additional SDOs that medium or large organizations may require.
  • Workflow tools are limited, focusing on how users can interact with the standards documents, rather than how users can leverage standards to improve operations.
  • With ASTM compass, you need to purchase Volumes of ASTM standards and you cannot fully customize your subscription for only the documents you truly require.

Standards Enterprise Subscription — Industry-Wide Standards Access and Platform Tools

For organizations with a diverse range of operations, a tailored subscription plan through a standards aggregator is the most practical option. Nimonik allows organizations to directly access ASTM standards as well as 75+ other major Standard Development Organizations (SDOs)  — including ISO, ASCE, CSA, IEEE, API, IPC, and BSI — in one easy location, rather than hopping between platforms.

While several other providers exist, it can be hard to find one that fits your organization’s need for seamless ASTM access. Accuris announced in 2025 that they will no longer offer ASTM standards, and many other providers don’t fully integrate ASTM standards into their platforms. Certain providers offer access to ASTM Compass, but users must jump between platforms to access the material.

Nimonik’s standards management platform is designed for organizations that rely on a broad range of industry documents, and allows users to access one of the largest collections of standards and regulations in the world. Nimonik offers tools to help users understand documents and facilitate comparisons between the revisions of standards, while workflow tools allow management of documents and requirements into actions, audits, risk assessments, and more. Usage reports and other budget-friendly tools also help departments manage costs easily. Your account executive will work closely with you to optimize your budget for purchasing standards.

Advantages

  • Obtain access to all of the standards that your organization requires. Access ASTM standards alongside other standards in a unified platform. There is no need to access ASTM Compass.
  • Leverage powerful workflow tools and features to make the most of your documents. Nimonik’s platform includes AI-enhanced document comparisons, usage reports, audit tools, assignable actions, and much more!

Constraints

  • Many providers other than Nimonik don’t actually integrate ASTM documents into their platforms, requiring teams to juggle multiple standards access systems instead of using one centralized platform.
  • No provider offers access to ASTM’s additional content including chapters, journal articles, and technical papers that supply the research and data supporting the standards.

Nimonik — One Platform to Manage Your Requirements

Nimonik aggregates standards from 75+ publishers, including ASTM, and regulations across 600+ jurisdictions. As a result, Nimonik provides broad coverage and convenience, allowing teams to track and manage obligations in one easy location.
