ISO 22000 standard aims to prevent and reduce food borne hazards in the food and feed chains. It recently released the new version of standard, ISO 22000: 2018, that replaces the old 2005 version.

The new edition:

  • adopts the High-Level Structure (HLS) common to other ISO management system standards like 14001 and 9001, to make management systems integration easier for organizations
  • introduces a new approach to risk by distinguishing risk at the operational and the business level
  • clarifies the PDCA cycle by having two separate cycles in the standard working together: one covering the management system and the other, covering the principles of HACCP
  • clarifies the operation process by providing a clear description of the differences between key terms like Critical Control Points (CCPs), Operational Prerequisite Programmes (OPRPs) and Prerequisite Programmes (PRPs).

Organizations have until 2021 to transition to the new standard.
