Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), pronounced “Eye-triple-E,” is the world’s largest professional association dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity. It is designed to serve professionals involved in all aspects of the electrical, electronic, and computing fields and related areas of science and technology that underlie modern civilization.

IEEE traces its origins back to 1884, a time when electricity started to exert a significant impact on society. At that time, the telegraph emerged as the dominant player in the electrical industry, revolutionizing global communication with a data transmission system that outpaced traditional transportation methods. But, IEEE wasn’t formed until January 1, 1963, when the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE) and the Institute of Radio Engineers (IRE) merged

The IEEE is a notable publisher of technical literature in electrical engineering, computer science, and electronics, contributing to one-third of the world’s output. Additionally, it plays a crucial role in the development of international standards that form the foundation of numerous telecommunications, information technology, and power generation products and services available today.

At present, the global community of IEEE boasts over 421,000 members spread across more than 160 countries. The organization’s headquarters is located in Washington, DC, with a corporate branch in New York City and an operations center in Piscataway, New Jersey.

Some of the popular standards that are available through the Nimonik platform are.

  • IEEE 80-2013 – IEEE Guide for Safety in AC Substation Grounding
  • IEEE 802.1Q-2022 – IEEE Standard for Local and Metropolitan Area Networks–Bridges and Bridged Networks
  • IEEE C2-2023 – 2023 National Electrical Safety Code(R) (NESC(R))
